| NOTES: 1. CLOSED SHOPS Ebenezar - Shop was closed in May by SHEF management when found in contravention of franchise rules. It was re-opened in August under new management. Good Shepherd - This shop closed in July due to very poor performance, caused in large part by relationship difficulties experienced within the group that owns it. We are working with the group to see how the shop can be re-opened. Mathiga Meru - This shop is in the Mbeere district, a poor area. The one Community HealthWorker was found to be unsuitable for the franchise work, and the group involved has not been able to find another shop manager so far. We hope to revive the shop by holding clinics there at least two times a month so that the community receives some basic services. Mbambaini - This shop was also run by a community group, and they found the shop manager to be unsuitable. Though there was an attempt to re-open the shop under new management, there were unresolved issues which led to the shop being closed in December. Mworoto - Shop was closed in February by SHEF management and the owners, who re-located from the area. A community health worker from the same area has successfully applied to open a shop, and the new shop will open in May 2003. |

| 2.
NEW SHOP Ecclesiastes - We opened one new shop in November. The shop is owned by Mrs. Mary Karuana, who was a member of the group that runs Genesis Shop. She has worked hard to save up enough funds for her own shop, and we were happy to enable her to start her own business. |
